CASE 28「Shinchi Town Reconstruction Promotion Division (Fukushima Prefecture, Japan)」
Main Article - About Fukushima Prefecture Shinchi Town Disaster Prevention Ryokuchi Park
The Tsurushi district of Shinchi Town suffered the effects of the tsunami. On October 26, 2019, Fukushima Prefecture Shinchi Town Disaster Prevention Ryokuchi Park opened in the district as a disaster prevention park aimed at reducing the damage caused by tsunamis.
The purpose of this disaster prevention park is not just to prevent disasters: with a camping area and children's playground, it will also serve as a new hub for people to gather by the seaside. We interviewed three people who were involved in the opening of the park: Mr. Yoshimoto from Shinchi Town Reconstruction Promotion Division, Mr. Ida, the president of Feel Alliance Co., Ltd., and Mr. Shiga, the president of Soshin Kensetsu Co., Ltd.
Q. Tell us about your future activities.
A. Mr. Yoshida, from Shinchi Town Reconstruction Promotion Division
I hope the park will provide a place to help people get some exercise and live healthier and more fulfilling lives. For that to happen, it will need to be made a part of the town's community through recreations and other leisure activities. I also would like to work on activities to raise people's awareness of the disaster in order to prevent the memory of it from fading.
Q. I've heard that a BMX pump track is currently being built for the bicycle sport called Bicycle Motocross, which has also been added to the Tokyo 2020 Games as a new event. What kind of activities do you have in mind for the future?
A. Mr. Ida, the president of Feel alliance Co., Ltd.
The pump track we are currently building is the third biggest in the world, and is getting attention from BMX athletes all over the world. With a one-of-a-kind innovative course design, it will be capable of hosting world championships and other major events. There are high expectations that athletes will gather in Shinchi Town from all over the world. If this dream comes true, Shinchi Town will become a BMX mecca that attracts people from all over the world. This will give the town a major boost.
A. Mr. Shiga, the president of Soshin Kensetsu Co., Ltd.
With jump track having become an official Olympic sport, I hope that 10 years from now we'll be seeing Olympic athletes from Shinchi Town who used the course in the disaster prevention park to train.
